Abstract (Freudian E-Slip: Communicating Sex Online) [Apr. 5th, 2000|04:55 am]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
With the advent of the internet as a major factor of social networking, questions regarding how we verify the identities of participant in the absence of visual and auditory clues have risen. One key area this is true of is the question of communicating sexual identity online. Previous studies found certain behaviors and language patterns that were strongly tied to the sexual identity of users online. An experiment was created in which online users were trained to fake these behaviors, then planted within a game in order to test whether these behaviors convinced unprepared judges to identify the plants according to these patterns rather than their real sexual identities. The end result was that the judges did not identify individuals according to their behavioral and linguistic patterns, but according to their professed identity.

The sentence "One key area this is true of is..." was difficult to wrap my brain around. Perhaps "One key area in which this is true is..."
