Interesting day was interesting. [May. 26th, 2009|06:55 am]

So yesterday may well be the strangest day I have had in a *long* time.

In the morning I hauled the three oldest girls out into the pasture one at a time to start teaching them to shoot. I've been teaching them basic rules about safety, and occasionally letting them just sling lead down range, but it was the first time we really started concentrating on actual aim, with real targets to figure it out on.

Shenandoah does alright. She'll need work, but I think she'll get there. Honor can't hit the broadside of a barn, and I'm not sure why. But we'll get it figured out. Maria... Maria seems to be a natural like the old fart teaching her. We do this regular, and she might be scarygood. They all three had fun, so that's good at least.

And then we got a phone call. The parents of one of my closest and oldest friends is moving to the area. They were curious if we want to sell the house.

Waitwhut?

We're seriously considering it. Not a whole lot of downsides, but lots of upsides.

And then a short bit later...

Rattlesnake.

Yes, there was a rattlesnake at the house, menacing the cats (actually, they were menacing it) and scaring the kids (well, mostly just Jamie.) Right in the middle of an important meeting, too. So there I go, running around to poke the poisonous snake with a stick and make it leave... That was exciting... (For the record, it was only a little one. About three feet. They can get up to six.)

Odd day. Odd odd day.

Ah, I had memories of the one time I was given a .22 to shoot.

I was scary good. (Granted, it was only shooting at cans on top of tree limbs, but still. Small targets.)

I think that was part of the reason why I wasn't allowed near a rifle or anything after that. ^.^

I think it might be worthwhile to check if Honor has the same issue I do, with the dominant eye being on the other side from the dominant hand. That stops me hitting a damn thing with an air rifle unless I hold it to my left shoulder. (Or switch eyes, but that ain't gonna happen because you can't shoot at something you can't even focus on)

I have that problem too - I'm short enough so that I can tilt my head in some cases, but you can't do that all the time.

Airguns, like in arcade shooters? I just use my left hand.

Hmm... That'd be interesting. She's left handed, but I did ask which eye she was aiming with, and she said the left... Maybe I can try having her use the right to see?

Maybe the rattlesnake heard you were selling and wanted to view the place? ^^

Dominant Eye

(Link)

Turns out your left-handed mother is right-eye dominant! Possibly your left-handed daughter is just like her grandmother!

Her grandmother says, "No poking snakes!"

A test for eye-dominance: http://www.archeryweb.com/archery/eyedom.htm

Hmm. I'll check and see if Honor is like her grandmother in that too!

Huh...I tried the eye-dominance test...and couldn't see the door knob clearly through my hands. I had to consciously choose which eye to look at the doorknob through.

That means I'm dain bramaged?

Definitely brain damage. (he he!) Maybe pick something larger, like the small end of a lasagna box. That's what I used, since I was facing the kitchen. :) Oh, and I'm right handed and left-eye dominant. Maybe that's why the bullets don't go where I think I'm aiming. (I can hear the laughing responses. I'm actually pretty good at shooting - I shot a thief in the eye in the dark! Okay, so that was a lucky roll of the dice. Pfft! I miss you guys!!!!)
